Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind is a book by Yuval Noah Harari

100,000 years ago, at least six human species inhabited the earth. Today there is just one. Us. Homo sapiens.

How ? Why?

summary of the progress of human evolution ,migration, Cognitive Revolution and Agricultural Revolution(spoiler-the author doesn’t favour it), how currency and coinage developed, the creation and spread of religions, the arrival of imperialism and capitalism, and the history of inequalities and injustices in a very concise novel format

Obviously it does not and cannot cover every detail but this book made me think about the above things quite a bit and that’s the way it should be I feel

A book which makes you think about it and when it’s written as beautifully yet simplistic it’s even better

Aleph

I have read a few of Paulo Coelho’s books, and loved them and I’m kind of familiar with the writing style

But this book left me disappointed

It has a bunch of useful thoughts and quotes but they are all scattered, let me elaborate ,

The author incoherently jumps from one idea to another with no apparent connection and i didn’t got where is the author trying to reach, the instances narrated are not normal everyday experiences so that you can relate to them and yeah I get it, not everyone can relate to his life but some parts especially the supernatural ones seemed like sci-fi to be honest

Also the whole relationship with Hilal is just awkward, starting from the beginning of the book till the end (Not to mention she’s half his age).

The immortal life of Henrietta lacks

You all have must heard about the Hela cells at some point in your science class, this is story of the woman behind the hela cells

Her name was Henrietta Lacks. She was a poor black tobacco farmer whose cells taken without her knowledge in 1951,the cells later became one of the most important tools in medicine, vital for developing the polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, in vitro fertilization, and more. Henrietta’s cells have been bought and sold by the billions, yet she remains virtually unknown, and her family can’t afford even health insurance.

This book deals with the issue of class and race in medical research and the society in general which is still there,

Author has done a wonderful job of explaining why Henrietta’s cells were mad still are so important, why she went unrecognized for decades, the pain it’s caused her family, The author Rebecca Skloot tries to rediscover her as a wife,a mother, a friend and most importantly a human.Skloot has done extensive research on her and worked with Lacks’ family to create the book after she became interested in Lacks after a biology teacher referenced her and the book includes those accounts with the lacks family ,how Henrietta was diagnosed, her dealing with the disease and death and the aftermaths her research shows in the book.

The main lesson I took from this book being a medical professional is the way new medical discoveries have grown in last few decades is immense but it also have a dark side of legal and ethical issues regarding tissue collection, research, patents and money.

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman

this novel kept me stuck to it like anything, and after a long time I loved a book this much

I’m kind of socially awkward like her but she is next level

this girl has a strange sense of humour which I love, she keeps on saying everything is fine although everything else suggests that it’s not,she has a very creepy mother with whom she has regular telephonic conversations throughout the story

She is quite practical but honestly has the worst possible social skills and keeps on thinking that other people are screwed in the department, still somehow she is endearing, deep down she longed for human interaction but constantly denies it ,She always has her guard up ,and as soon as she starts to let it down and allow her self to feel love;not even the romantic love, the humanity one ,her life starts to change ,she looks back at her life & things happen to say the least

This book is funny ,loaded with emotions and the story opens up layer by layer and keeps you engaged, the characters are believable and endearing, this book is going to stay with me

The prodigal daughter

Sequel to Kane and Able, novel about a young girl who was the daughter of a Polish immigrant who build his own American Deam in the form of the Baron hotels.Florentyna now runs hers fathers business and wants to be the first American female president.

She is very honest and smart not only her buisness life but also her politics and the sub plots like the love story are also used very smarty to move the plot rather than just taking the readers time, a lot of

historical facts in the book were added with subtlety and grace.

A lot of matter you have already read in Kane and able so can be a little repetitive but it’s from florentyna view point here -not as good as Kane and Able but still it’s a very good book if you like politics and history fiction

4⭐️/5

Birbal Sahni

This book I got many years before in some book fair, and my love for biographies has just towered ever since

The beauty about biographies of such great people is that you get to know them as just people, their struggle with day to day life and their journey to greatness

FYI: The man in the picture is Birbal Sahni (14 November 1891 – 10 April 1949) was an Indian paleobotanist who studied the fossils of the Indian subcontinent. He also worked in fields of geology and archaeology. He founded what is now the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeobotany at Lucknow in 1946.He was also involved in the establishment of Indian science education and served as the President of the National Academy of Sciences, India and as an Honorary President of the International Botanical Congress, Stockholm.

Sense and sensibilities

Continuing with our #bringbacktheclassics series I’ll be telling y’all about this book today, you may have already read it some school assignments or definitely heard about it, let me tell y’all some more interesting things

The thing I love the most about this book is the writing style,Which was one of the most popular forms of fiction in Austen’s time known as epistolary fiction,in which all of the action, dialogue, and character interactions are reflected through letters sent from one or more of the characters

The books was major success in its time and the first edition was published anonymously

It was the first Austen title to be republished in England after her death, and the first illustrated Austen produced in Britain

And I’ll leave a beautiful quote from the book for you all “It is not time or opportunity that is to determine intimacy;—it is disposition alone. Seven years would be insufficient to make some people acquainted with each other, and seven days are more than enough for others.” #

Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn

#bringbacktheclassics series

Today we are talking about a childhood friend Tom Sawyer,

Tom lived in a town up along the Mississippi River,in the 1840s,in the fictional town of St. Petersburg, inspired by Hannibal, Missouri, where our legendary author Mark Twain lived as a boy. In the novel Tom Sawyer has several adventures, often with his friend, Huckleberry or huck.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer was published in 1876(143 years ago:imagine)

Now more than a century later it is still loved and people love to read,it has stood the test of time. According to critics it’s because of the humor and perceptiveness of Twain in the portrayal of these young boys and its universality

This is such a great series, highly recommended

The unquiet land-Barkha Dutt

How does Barkha Dutt deals with so much especially misogyny?

I thought this is a memoir but rather, it is a look at India through Authors eyes and experiences, investigating some of the “fault lines”: gender, caste, religion and terrorism. Also rather than following a fixed timeline she jumps between big topics like Kargil war, Nirbhaya case ,the 2004 Tsunami, 26/11,2002 Gujarat riots, the lynching of Mohammad Akhlaq.

For me it was a difficult read, too intense at times, I felt like keeping the book down yet I came back to it later for the sake of finishing, You can feel the author pouring her heart out on a lot of topics and for that quotient I completed it also I don’t believe in leaving things incomplete.

Mafia queens of Mumbai

**NON-FICTION FEELS FICTITIOUS ** Call me a creep or blame it on me being a medical student but I love these true crime books and thinking about what must have been on this persons mind or what circumstances made them do this?

This book in the picture has 13 stories about the ladies of Gangland & big names like Dawood Ibrahim, Chhota Rajan, Ravi Poojary are in the secondary roles.

This book has the style of journalistic writing, pieced together from official documents, case reports and anecdotes from the subject’s family and acquaintances.

I picked up this book on a lazy afternoon at my cousin’s place but was unable to part from it till I finished it. So that’s something
