Virgin’s Death

Title:Virgins’ death
Publisher: notionpress
Author: Dheeraj Preet (Redhya)
Genre : crime fiction

📎Blurb : In the town where people die usually of old age a school girl dies, followed by more deaths in the same school and our protagonist inspector Shamsher and Farooq are trying solve the case.

📎My views : The story started off pretty well with the well researched forensics details and I loved the angle of Varta tribe of middle ages and the tension between the protagonist but few things felt a little out of place like a bit too much sexuality and a bit too less of plot development of an otherwise good idea.

Book is 3⭐/5 for me.

A wrinkle in time

Genre – young adult
Author – Madeleine L’Engle

📎published in 1962, first in a series of five novels, the book has won multiple awards till date,it also has a multi starrer movie and a TV show made on it,I loved this book alot as a kid (now not that much)

📎This book for its time was considered feminist and very unique for its time.
It also gathered a few controversies around it but even after 60 years of its initial publication this book feels exhilarating and adventurous to me,and especially for young children I would recommend this book.

Queens of crime

It’s a compilation of non fiction crime Stories by kulpreet yadav and Sushantsingh
Published by Penguin India

As they say guns are more interesting than roses, stories like these will be more than stories about saints,

Honestly I’m a fan of this genre,so I loved this book

Blurb :

“nonfiction that feels like fiction”

From prostitution ring leaders to drug lords to water Mafia these women have been there and done that

Being a frequent follower of news outlets and crime shows, some of these cases were not new to me but what new was ,the humane outlook ,as the narrative along with the crimes also discovers the circumstances in which these women started with the crime world, of course nothing can justify was they did but it’s an interesting outlook

Language is simple, stories are engaging, genre and title itself is quite appealing

Overall a 4⭐/5 for me

All the characters are very positive and adorable, the relationships they share are so beautiful (wiping tears)

Rҽʋιҽɯ-

This book touches on multiple themes but I would like to think of it as a romance-thriller

Blurb : “If they’d been in a comic book, Adith would’ve been a supervillain, playing mind games with Vikram’s straight- arrow superhero. Tonight, the villian was going to play god of love ,saving the hero from his own stubborn stupidity”

(This line from 226th page of the iBook version would describe the two male characters best I feel)

Apart from these characters there is the protagonist Seema,an IB agent trying to get hold of a corrupt politician

Adith an aspiring politician who also happens to be son of a minister, aware of his father deeds he is still kind of honest.

And Vikram’s ,who is owner of a cybersecurity firm and also happens to be bestie of adith

📎What I liked?
The characters have enought back stories for reader to understand their pysche in a way and also the involvement of families, which at times ties their hands and makes the story more enriched

📎What did not worked for me?
I felt like the ending was a bit expected,it did not surprised me and the side stories in some chapters took away way too much space from the protagonist

Recommended? Yes

Rating 3⭐/5

Where will man take us?

Most informative and compact piece of nonfiction I have read in 2019

📎This book is so informative and so well planned. It is divided into five sections, chapters, subheadings & enriched with quotes and good language,It makes all the information more understandable

📎This book covers a myriad of topics including nanotechnology, mathematics, Artificial intelligence, computing, and genetics. Their evolution with time and their possible impacts on us and society in the coming future.

📎TBH,I had very little idea about these topics, so it took me a while to read and get these things and understand where we stand today technology wise

📎Also as the title suggests it create a question about the future of technology and where it will take us ?

📎I can just imagine the amount of effort that must have got into the book because it shines throughout the book,
and kudos the author and his team for such an amazing informative book.

Narasimha

It is a retelling of an Hindu mythology of Narasimha avatar of lord Vishnu and his devotee Prahalad.

But the author has taken the characters from the story and presented them in a very humane way, with all the turmoils going on in the characters mind, the loses the suffer in the wars, speaking of wars the scenes are depicted in a very fascinating way, also introduction of topics like rape and nuclear power in the veil of mythology is done gracefully

The layout of the book is so intriguing, from the prologue to the epilogue and a map of Illavarti at the back and the cover capture the essence of the book perfectly, 4⭐/5 for me

Summary

The book opens with the prologue showing an attack on Kashyapuri, the capital from where Hiranyakashyap rules.Indra attacks the capital when the king is not there

Kayadhu- Hiranyakashyap’s wife-decides to take the responsibility & face the battle and inturn gets killed by Narasimha, who has his loyalty to Indra
(leaving behind her two very young sons Prahlad & Anuhrad)

Now the story leaps 14 years Narasimha now living as a physician in human colony. Prahlad & Anuhrad facing a battle against Jayant.

After the war,Hiranyakashyap meets both his son’s and guide them on their future duties.

Sending Anuhrad to help his cousin Andhaka to find the Pashupatastra,
he himself leaves for Yakshlok to help Vigyasa defeat Lord Agni & Prahlad is left as the Interim King.

On reaching Yakshlok, Hiranyakashyap search for the ultimate weapon-Brahmashastra and to get that,he has to get through the three trials in the Temple of Brahma

And the story moves ahead to find the answers to the fate of these multiple characters.

Without giving any spoilers,I can tell that the converging storylines looks promising to me

*What did not work for me?*

The only thing that did not work for me was the hazy timeline and some what of English hangover, like in a book where terms like ‘asuras’ and all mytho terms are used then why salutations like ‘my lady’ and people are roaming around in horses but they have ‘physicians’ instead of Vaidya, banks instead of ‘sahukars’,seemed odd to me.

Boy Erased

An exceptional true story about a 19 year old gay boy who gets unexpectedly outted to his religious parents and is forced to go to ex gay conversion therapy, that promises to ‘cure’ him of his homosexuality and shockingly this took around 2004, this book was sad, the parts in the conversation therapy got me into tears,

As a book it had emotion, which came through pages ,the start and ending was more stronger the the middle its-bits

Erased for me was a lesson on love and coming of age story, that how, against all odds, Garrard discovered the love we have for ourselves, and how we can continue loving the very ones who made us doubt our worth.

After reading this I could just imagine what happens in India, although society has become slightly more acceptable to people ,like in my city Raipur we have a wonderful organisation @lgbtqchattisgarh
Where you can meet people, share your experiences, and stay also

The gene

“The point is this: if you cannot separate the phenotype of mental illness from creative impulses, then you cannot separate the genotype of mental illness and creative impulse”

A beautiful written history of mental health problems and their solutions from past to present, also many buzz worthy topics are covered like gender and sexual identity, genetic screening to make a few

Mukherjee walks us through many exceptional people who did their work in the field to genetics and also stories of many ‘faux- scientists’

Also we see the ill treatment of people with mental illnesses in the past, that includes one of his own family members from father’s side as well .
Aristotle, Darwin and Mendel to eugenics in Nazi camps to modern embryonic stem cells development,he tried to cover it’s all

All this makes this book abit tedious to some people but it’s so informative and we’ll written and because I love genetics so much

I loved this book
